Use an image as a map
Paul Coupe
Just as records are geo located on to a map view as an alternative way of looking at records, why not also be able to locate them on to an image. Such as a plan/elevation drawing of a building. This would enable building inspectors who have detailed drawings of the building to plot exact fault locations on to an image, then view the record info by clicking the various location markers now visible on the drawing. Could open up many possibilities

This can be done by creating a “map” which is a life sized drawing of a building in its correct spatial location. This can be created in any GIS software and then put into a program called TileMill to create maps which Fulcrum can read. QGIS is one much mapping program which also can create Mtiles without the need to use TileMill. And it is free.

Fred Spain: Hi Fred, I had the same idea a while back, but I've not had chance to try it out. I haven't used map layers before so it'll all be a new learning process for me.

Paul Coupe: Hi Paul. We use “maps” and drawings a lot in our work and, like anything, the more you use it, the more comfortable you become with it. The trick is being being able to draw the building having the right “zoom” levels. The only issue you may have is being able to zoom in “close enough” to differentiate between the pins. This MAY need further work from fulcrum if you want to put a pin in each room for example. Good luck.

Fred Spain: Yea I can see that being an issue regarding pin size. Our drawings would typically be elevational drawings for use during external building inspections (of a tower block for example), so they wouldn't relate spatially to GPS at all. I guess I could make the drawings the size of a city if needed.. Like all things it'll be trial and error at first until the ideal method is found! Thanks for your help Fred

Paul Coupe: I was just wondering if you had a chance to try this out at all?
